BECOME A VOLUNTEER
Make an impact:  Volunteering your time and talents is a powerful way to improve the world and educate others about causes you care about.
Get Satisfaction: Give a voice to your heart through your giving and volunteering, keep your talents alive, feel better about yourself, feel needed and valued, act upon and express your beliefs.
Help Others: Volunteers lend their unique influence and connection to an organisations' growth, make a difference in someone's life, be altruistic, solve a community problem, give back to society.
Learn: Volunteering is a learning experience.  Test yourself in new situations to see what truly interests you.  It gives you the luxury to fail - the chance to risk doing something you've never done before and to learn from it.  Learn about yourself, your values, beliefs and views of the world in which you live.  Discover your talents, learn a new skill or knowledge, learn about your community, better understand social justice issues.
Develop yourself: Develop creativity by trying new things, starting a new program, taking risks.  Develop compassion, develop your personality, gain a new perspective on things, self-actualise, achieve, build self-esteem and self-confidence and sense of independence, gat an opportunity to work independently, gain hands-on experience, interact with people.
Enjoy: Have fun, feel good, take a break, get a very satisfying experience, express gratitude, reduce stress, think positively, have a more balanced life, meet inspiring people, make friends, discover tremendous energy, create and maintain relationships.  Volunteer as a family and give the entire family a shared experience as a wonderful family memory.
Utilise time: The truth is that any amount of time we can give is enough to make a significant difference in someone else's life.
The Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre welcomes new volunteers.  Please call
4099 5518 to register your interest.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Hi, I'm Wendylu, (loopy lulu)
I was born on a cattle station on the river Murray.  I was a boarder at PGC and then studied pathology at the AD Uni whilst working in the lab at the Institute of Med & Vet Science where we kept our own Rhesus monkeys to make the Salk Vaccine.

After many years here I went flying with TAA, which became Australian which became Qantas, also had a stint with Alitalia.  Retiring from the 'high life' I worked in London for an entrepreneur, modelling, etc.  We did the jazz circuit with our bands all over UK & also dabbled in recruiting for films.  I chose Mark for 'Oliver'.  We hung out with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Tom Jones etc during these wild times in the 60's at DeHem's in Soho and went to the theatre every single night - we drank champers & smoked in the stalls.

Next it was 3 years of intense travel to every part of the globe.  I met Carlos in Mexico, got married and ended up living in Colombia for 15 years, he was assassinated due to jealousy over our emerald mines.  I then returned to AD where I worked as a Spanish interpreter for 20 years and also had an antique shop.

I have been a volunteer/charity worker since I was 3 as my family were always involved in politics and the community, you name it, they did it!

My passions are art, theatre, music, antiques and OP SHOPS.

I arrived in Port Douglas in October 7 years ago.  Within a week I had bought a place and mosied down to Mudlo Street.  I said I wouldn't mind working here and they said "When can you start?".  So I guess the rest is history and I have been at the NikNak Shed ever since.  It was fun at the old place, dragging the racks out through the sand, getting bitten by midges, etc, sometimes we worked 3 or 4 days a week, don't think I could handle it these days, seemed to have lost the plot somewhat!

Our evolution has been amazing from the tin shed to our upmarket, air conned 'boutique', of today, we all should be so proud.

Yours, rully, rully truly, Wendylu.
